You better bamboo-lieve it: there’s still time to say goodbye

Our Panda Postbox is full to the brim!

Adelaide Zoo has been overwhelmed with the pawfect letters, messages and drawings farewelling Giant Pandas, Wang Wang and Fu Ni, with the black-and-white duo receiving over 1000 hand-written notes so far.

Excitingly, there is still time to see South Australia’s much-loved bears before they return home to China, with official advice granting access to Bamboo Forest for zoo-goers during their quarantine period.

“Wang Wang and Fu Ni will now begin their quarantine period, and we’re very happy to announce that the public will still have time to come in and see them before they leave for China,” Director of Adelaide Zoo, Dr Phil Ainsley, said.

“Whilst we continue to work through the regulatory processes and permitting requirements for returning the Giant Pandas to China, we have excitingly been advised Wang Wang and Fu Ni will have access to their day rooms and outdoor habitat throughout their quarantine period.

“This means that there is still time to come in to the zoo, say farewell and post a letter in the Panda Postbox before mid-November.

“The next stage of planning for our Giant Panda’s departure will see us working through their flights and the intricate logistics of returning Wang Wang and Fu Ni home to China.

“As soon as we have more details to share about their final days here at Adelaide Zoo we will be sure to share them with the zoo community as we know there is a lot of love for these very special bears.”

Visitors can drop letters in Panda Post Boxes located in the Panda Shop and Bamboo Forest.

On their final days here in Adelaide, these special letters will be made into enrichment for the pandas to rip open.

For those from far away or who can’t attend the zoo in person, written messages and videos for Wang Wang and Fu Ni can be submitted online at adelaidezoo.com.au/farewellwangwangandfuni or by emailing [email protected].

Adelaide Zoo will welcome new Giant Pandas, Xing Qiu (pronounced shing chee-y-ull) and Yi Lan (ee-lun) to Bamboo Forest later this year.

Zoos SA looks forward to sharing more black-and-white news with the community as the next chapter of the zoo’s Giant Panda journey begins.
