Adelaide Zoo

Roly-poly tiger cubs join the wild Light Creatures

There is just a week to go until the Light Creatures come out to play!

And while favourites including Panda Playtime, Skink Park and Underwater World will return, there is a host of new curious creatures and installations set to light up Adelaide Zoo after dark.

A trio of roly, poly Sumatran Tiger cubs will pounce in to play with roving tiger Cahaya to celebrate the birth of Adelaide Zoo’s three cubs, Susu, Marni and Ketambe, who turn six months old this month.

Hiding throughout the zoo, families will have the chance to win a Tiger and Friends experience by exploring the gardens to find all three throughout their wild winter night out.

Swooping in join the playful cubs is the 4.5m tall Falcon with an impressive 10m wing span and florescent feathers, along with Evolution; a 360 projection in the historic rotunda taking visitors on a journey through time.

“There are so many curious and wonderful creatures to discover at Adelaide Zoo this winter,” says Elaine Bensted, CE of Zoos SA.

“Light Creatures, presented by Zoos SA and Illuminate Adelaide, is always a highlight in my calendar and I am so excited to see the new lanterns come to life as the amazing team bump in the event over the next week.

“I am really excited to see the enormous new Falcon lantern at the zoo and this year, it is very special for us to welcome the three playful cub lanterns to join Cahaya the roving tiger.

“It is the perfect way to not only mark the birth of Delilah and Kembali’s three cubs, Susu, Marni and Ketambe, but also to shine a light on the conservation of species like the critically-endangered Sumatran Tiger.

“To me that is what Light Creatures is all about; sparking a love of conservation in a new, fun and illuminating light.”

But the fun doesn’t end there!

Visitors will delight as a consortium of clawsome crabs will come alive to scuttle their way around Underwater World and marvel as Adelaide Zoo’s heritage Elephant House is lit up with enchanting projected illustrations of the Flinders Ranger’s Yellow-foot Rock-wallaby – or ‘Andu’ as it is known in Adnyamathanha language.

Plus visitors will have the chance to fill up on hearty winter warmers including gourmet pastries, toasted sandwiches, hot chocolate and mulled wine, and tasty churros.

A conservation celebration, Light Creatures will illuminate Adelaide Zoo from 29 June – 23 July.

Illuminate Adelaide’s co-founders and creative directors, Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge said: “The zoo holds a special place in our hearts and nothing is quite as magical as exploring the exciting trail that weaves around the zoo at night time.

“There is so much to see and interact with and we invite all South Australian families to experience the wonder of the zoo after dark.”

Light Creatures at Adelaide Zoo, presented by Zoos SA and Illuminate Adelaide, is brought to life thanks to SA Power Networks and through the creative talents of the Zoos SA team as well as A Blanck Canvas, Carla O’Brien, Leigh Creek Area School, Modelbox Design, Jack Buckskin and Elizabeth Close.
