Koala sisters join the Adelaide Zoo family

A new pair of furry faces with just the right cute koala-fications have joined the family at Adelaide Zoo.

Meet two-year-old Southern Koalas, Peaches and Pretzel, who made the 600km journey from Ballarat Wildlife Park yesterday.

The half-sisters will undertake a short quarantine period in their leafy habitat, where they will be able to be seen by the public.

Assistant Curator, Michelle Birkett, said the team were very excited to see the return of this iconic native species.

“We are super excited to have koalas back here at Adelaide Zoo,” she said.

“Peaches and Pretzel will be amazing ambassadors for their species and help us spread the word about the importance of conservation for our native Australian species.

“The girls have settled in well to their new habitat and have spent time climbing and exploring their updated habitat.

“We’d love everyone who is visiting to call past and say hello to our new koala duo!”

Excitingly, the arrival of the new koala pair will also make way for a brand-new addition to the zoo.

Plans are underway for a new koala habitat as part of the first stage of Adelaide Zoo’s new Aussie Icons precinct with construction expected to commence later this year.

Southern Koalas are considerably larger and have thicker fur than their northern counterparts.

The species can be found across South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, but are sadly under threat due to loss of habitat.
