As South Australia swelters through summer, the team at Adelaide Zoo is making sure its animals stay safe, comfortable – and even a little bit spoiled.
“With the mercury set to climb to 39 degrees and beyond today, we take extra steps to ensure every animal in our care is kept cool and content,” said Chad Crittle, Director of Adelaide Zoo.
From frosty treats to shady retreats, the Adelaide Zoo pulls out all the stops on hot days.
“One of the things our animals love most are their favourite snacks frozen into giant ice blocks. You’ll see everyone from Meerkats to otters – even Obi the Pygmy Hippo – enjoying their icy enrichment,” said Chad. “Our beautiful Giant Panda Yi Lan had a ball recently, licking and playing with her specially made ice block.”
Many animals at Adelaide Zoo also have access to climate-controlled areas, where they can relax in air-conditioned comfort during the peak of the day.
“Our habitats are designed with animal welfare front and centre. If it’s too hot outside, many of our animals can choose to retreat into cool indoor spaces at any time,” said Chad.
Keepers also get creative with extra cooling measures: think showers, baths, and misting systems dotted throughout the zoo.
“It’s not just about keeping cool, it’s about comfort and wellbeing,” Chad added. “Our keepers know each animal’s preferences, and on hot days, they tailor care to make sure everyone’s having the best day possible.”
Whether it’s icy snacks, shady naps, or a refreshing mist, Adelaide Zoo is committed to ensuring all creatures great and small are kept healthy and happy, no matter the temperature.
