Our wild new Variety Children’s Zoo is open!

The Variety Children’s Zoo is an amazing play space for kids filled with interactive areas that allow them to get closer than ever to some of the zoo’s most popular residents.

Complete with areas for children of all abilities to play and explore, the new Variety Children’s Zoo features things like balance beams and ladders for our charismatic goats, climbing branches for our friendly quokkas and a dedicated presentation area for keepers to share stories about their animal friends.

Located next to our ever-popular Nature’s Playground and connected via aerial walkways catering for all abilities, the Variety Children’s Zoo is a must-visit stop during your visit to Adelaide Zoo.

Everywhere you look something wild is happening: above you? Goats trot overhead. Under your feet? Keep an eye out for our gorgeous brood of friendly chickens and their musical instruments! In front of you? Information about how to care for your pets like never before.

And parents? Drop your shoulders and relax. The new Variety Children’s Zoo is just a hop, skip and a jump from the Nature’s Playground and Wisteria Café. That’s right, kids can play and learn about wildlife while you grab your morning pick-me-up.

So bring your little animals to meet ours for a no-brainer, fun-filled family day out!

Colour in and learn

Our Variety Children’s Zoo is not only the first stop on your Adelaide Zoo adventure, it’s also all about the welfare of our animals. Children can learn what it takes to develop trusting relationships with our animal friends, and how they can use these techniques to enrich the lives of their pets at home. Each colouring page in this booklet explains all about a different area of animal welfare and by colouring in your child can learn more about how we care for animals and how they can too.

Why the Variety Children’s Zoo should be at the top of your must-visit list!

Dedicated presentations to delight and educate

With a dedicated presentation area, kids can see what it takes to develop trusting relationships with our animal friends, and how they can use these techniques to enrich the lives of their pets at home.

Goat rock climbing and two storey walkways

Our charismatic goats love getting up high and testing their fantastic balance skills, something that makes them incredibly well suited to their mountainous homes in the wild. By making sure the new play space features things like balance beams, seesaws, ladders or even trampolines, we’re making sure our goats are encouraged to think harder about navigating their environment, keeping them active and healthy and encouraging natural behaviours.

Swinging chickens!

Chickens are highly intelligent animals and you might have seen our brood making music with xylophones put there by their keepers. On top of making music, our cheeky chickens will also get enrichment out of a specially-designed chicken swing. These special birds will learn to operate the swing themselves and exercise their balance skills in the process.

Be the Face!

Step into our incredible new Variety Children’s Zoo and say “I supported this and my picture is here to prove it”.

If you were part of our ‘Be the Face’ campaign and uploaded a photo of your child, grandchild, loved one or pet you can soon see these lovely faces etched into Adelaide Zoo’s history for years to come!
