Adelaide Zoo
Frome Road
Adelaide, SA 5000 Australia

This professional learning session explores how Adelaide Zoo can be used as a living text to inspire poetry and prose.

Led by our GM of Wild Learning, a high school English teacher by training and published poet and writer, the session draws on classroom practice and contemporary creative writing pedagogy grounded in real-world learning environments.

Informed by emerging research into the role of nature connection in supporting wellbeing and creative expression, teachers will engage in guided sensory walks through the Zoo, short mindfulness and observation exercises, and structured writing activities that model how encounters with natural spaces can be translated into rich language experiences.

The session provides a suite of adaptable strategies that can be used during zoo visits, in school grounds, or back in the classroom, supporting students to slow down, notice detail, and develop voice, imagery, and metaphor in their writing. Participants will leave with practical tools and ready-to-use activities that enhance literacy outcomes while strengthening students’ connection to the natural world.
