Scratch a Capybara!

Step into the calm and curious world of the Capybara— one of nature’s most relaxed residents. In this exclusive behind-the-scenes encounter, you’ll meet the charming Capybara trio as they nibble on snacks, enjoy enrichment, and wander over to say hello.

This is your chance to connect with the world’s largest rodent in a way most visitors never get to experience. Guided by one of our expert keepers, you’ll use a special enrichment tool to give the Capybaras a gentle scratch, something they absolutely love! As they munch contentedly from their feeding pads and lean in for a groom, you’ll discover what makes these social animals so unique, from their quirky personalities to their peaceful nature.

With a small group size and a laid-back setting, this is the perfect way to slow down, share a moment with some truly loveable animals, and walk away with a new favourite species.

Highlights of the experience:

  • Meet the adorable and fluffy Capybara trio
  • Use an enrichment tool to give them a scratch
  • Watch them snack and interact in a calm, up-close setting
  • Learn fun and fascinating facts from the keepers who care for them
  • Intimate group size with just 3 participants per session

The capybara is the largest of all the 1,729 species of living rodents!

As a semi-aquatic mammal, the Capybara is an excellent swimmer, thanks to its webbed feet, thick fur, and the high placement of its eyes, ears, and nose on its head.

How your ticket helps our conservation efforts

Capybaras might be calm by nature, but their future in the wild is less certain. Across South America, wetland habitats are being lost or polluted, putting pressure on the species and the ecosystems they help support.

By joining us for A Very Capy Encounter, you’re helping us care for our Capybara trio and support broader conservation and education efforts across Zoos SA. Every experience contributes to world-class animal care, habitat preservation, and public education, helping to inspire a new generation of wildlife advocates.

Your ticket also supports our commitment to creating meaningful connections between people and animals. These moments of curiosity and compassion are powerful tools in protecting species—because when people care, change happens.
