Adelaide Zoo

Help us celebrate the tallest animal in the zoo

It’s the leggiest week of the year!

What animal can run as fast as 50 kilometres per hour, only needs between 5-30 minutes of sleep per day and has a bluish-purple tongue that’s between 45-50 centimeters long?

Help us raise awareness for the bold and beautiful giraffe species by spending the day with gentle giants Kimya, Nolean and Matumi, taking part in a giraffe experience or picking up a spotty souvenir from the shop.

Just by visiting, you’re supporting these leggy legends not only at the zoo but also in the wild.

The silent extinction

While many people believe the giraffe species is safe, the International Union of Conservation has classified the species as vulnerable to extinction with less than 117,000 giraffe thought to be left in the wild.

What are we doing? As a conservation charity, we’re proud to have the most successful giraffe breeding program in Australasia at our sister site, Monarto Safari Park.

Zoos SA also partners with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation who are fighting to save the species throughout Africa. Our support has helped to purchase GPS satellite-tracking units that provide a better understanding of wild giraffes’ movements and habitat use to inform effective conservation and planning.

With your help we can save giraffe before it’s too late…
