From tiger to house cat: applying Zoos SA’s animal welfare techniques to your pets

PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL AND REGISTRATIONS HAVE CLOSED. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE ANY ADDITIONAL ATTENDEES.

Do you ever wish you knew what your pet was thinking? How can you tell if they’re happy, healthy or stimulated? Come along to an engaging and informative presentation to hear all about how our keepers use scientific methods to understand and enrich the lives of animals like rhinos, Sumatran Tigers, Spotted Hyaenas and White-cheeked Gibbons.

At Zoos SA, keeping our animals happy and healthy is our number one priority. We continually monitor and look for ways to improve the welfare of the animals in our care by using a specially-designed welfare audit tool, based on the Five Domains model of animal welfare. Devised by Professor David Mellor of Massey University in New Zealand, this scientific model of welfare focuses on four domains of physical welfare (nutrition, environment, health and behaviour) and how they work together to form the last domain, either a positive or negative mental state.

Want to know more, not just about how we bring the domains to life at the zoo, but about how you can do the same for your pets at home? We’ll help you understand how pets are affected by their environment and show you techniques you can use to make sure they’re happy, healthy and mentally-stimulated at home.

Please note, this event will be held at the Santos Conservation Centre located opposite the Adelaide Zoo main admissions gate. No admission fee is required. Tickets will not be issued.

Please note: this event is now full and registrations have closed. We will not be able to accommodate any additional attendees.
