Adelaide Zoo Lion Celebrates 10th Purr-thday

Adelaide Zoo is abuzz with excitement today as it prepares for a very special birthday paw-ty in honour of its majestic male lion.

Mujambi, who turns 10 years old today, will be treated to a special ‘zebra’ birthday cake to mark the milestone.

Acting Senior Carnivore Keeper, Arliah Hayward says Mujambi’s special birthday treats should generate a great deal of excitement from the 190kg cat.

“In celebration of Mujambi’s 10th birthday we’re creating a fun and stimulating environment by treating him to some of his favourite enrichment treats.

“He’s basically like a big kitten so it’s likely his ‘birthday cake’ will be enthusiastically demolished within minutes.

“Mujambi has had a few health issues over recent years, so it’s really great to see him in such excellent shape on his 10th birthday. He’s definitely one happy and healthy big cat!”

As one of Adelaide Zoo’s most popular and well loved animals, zoo keepers are expecting a large crowd to gather to help wish him a happy birthday.

Born at Mogo Zoo in New South Wales on 26 March 2005 and arriving at Adelaide Zoo in 2007, Mujambi is one of three African Lions that call Adelaide Zoo home.

He is housed separately to the female lionesses as he has epileptic-like seizures, which makes it dangerous for his wellbeing to live with the females. Mujambi miraculously overcame testicular cancer in 2012.
