Kindy Zoo- Aussie Animal Adventure

(Pre-school)

Aimed at Kindergarten aged children and designed to make children aware of the unique Australian wildlife while stimulating their interest in the world around them. Teachers who book this program on the designated days receive activity sheets about Australian Animals to use in the classroom, a booklet with supervisor notes to use on the day at the Zoo and a lesson with an Education Officer that involves a close up with a native animal.
Cost: $20 per class + Zoo entry
Maximum class size: 33 (up to 3 sessions available per day).

Junior Wildlife Days

(Reception - Yr 3)

A variety of 10 conservation/environmental topics are on offer for Reception- Yr 3 classes. Each class receives a pack which includes fact sheets, worksheets, a booklet for their visit to the Zoo and a 45 minute lesson with an Education Officer. The 10 topics offered are:

  • Threatened Species
  • Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  • Wonderful Water
  • Australian Animal Adventure
  • Predators
  • Rainforests
  • Habitats
  • Camouflage
  • Deserts
  • Reptiles

Cost: $20 per class + Zoo entry
Maximum class size: 33 (up to 3 sessions per day).

Wild Zoo Days

(yr. 4-7)

A 45 minute lesson with an Education Officer during your visit to the Zoo and a Teacher Pack are offered with the Wild Zoo Day program. The lesson will focus on one of a number of environmental and conservation topics and the Pack contains pre and post visit ideas and activities, worksheets and information about the topic. The topics are:

  • Threatened Species
  • Role of the Zoo
  • Enclosure Design
  • Adaptations
  • Food Web
  • Classification
  • Habitats
  • Desert Animals


Cost: $20 per class + Zoo entry
Maximum class size: 33 (up to 3 sessions per day).

Zoo School

(Yr. 4-7)

A 1-3 day intensive program that involves negotiated lessons with an Education Officer each day.

Zoosnoozes

Zoosnoozes are offered 3 nights a week at the Adelaide Zoo. The children sleep in the double classrooms in the Education Building and are required to bring all their own bedding. An Education Officer stays overnight with each group and offers guided night walks and support for the teachers. All Zoosnoozes include Dinner and Breakfast as well as afternoon tea, supper and morning snacks (on Tuesday). All students are free to stay in the Zoo for as long as they wish the following day. These programs are extremely popular and book out very quickly.

Each Zoosnooze has a strict 1 adult per 5 children ratio and a maximum group size of 33 students.

Tuesday night Planetkeeper Zoosnoozes are offered to school groups from Yr. 3-7. This Snooze involves 3 lessons with an Education Officer about your choice of animal (bears, orang-utans or tigers).  Students also get a chance to go behind the scenes and visit the enclosures of the animal of their choice.  The aim of the Planetkeeper Zoosnooze is to make children aware of the problems facing these animals and to empower them to make a change.  Students are greeted for their first lesson at 1.30pm on Tuesday and the last lesson finishes at 10.00am the next morning.
Cost in 2008: $45 per student Adults: $9

Thursday night Zoosnoozes are also offered to school groups from Rec-7. It is open to teachers to focus on any theme they wish. Groups are greeted at the Zoo at 1:30pm and have the afternoon to look around the Zoo under their teacher’s supervision, returning to the Education Centre at 5pm. On Friday morning they will have a session with the Education Officer which will involve a close up with an animal.
Cost in 2008: $40 per student Adults: $9

Friday night Zoosnoozes are offered to all primary school groups, scout groups, church groups etc. This program begins when the group arrive at 5pm. On Saturday morning the group is given a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Food Stores before being free to look around the Zoo at their leisure.

All programs are now fully booked for 2008.  Bookings for Terms 1 and 2 2009 will be available at the beginning of Term 4, 2008.

Students with High Intellectual Potential

(SHIP)

This program is offered to both primary and secondary students. An afternoon session each week over five weeks enables the students to undertake an extended threatened species “animal study”. Students receive a lesson from an Education Officer at the start of each session.
Cost: $25.00 per student for the 5 weeks. Maximum group size: 20

Planet Keeper - day visits

The Planetkeeper programs at the Adelaide Zoo are designed to help students learn about, and raise money for conservation programs.  Groups can choose from Sumatran Tiger, Orang-utan or the Sun Bear. They are about taking action against the destruction of these species and raising awareness of the plight of these animals.  With each program teachers are sent a pack containing animal facts, information about what is happening to the animals, organisations helping them and ways that you can help.  During your zoo visit students will have the opportunity to meet a zoo keeper and go behind the scenes, as well as have a session with the Education staff focussing on their chosen animal.
Cost: $20 per class plus Zoo Entry. Maximum 33 students per session.

Career Awareness Days

Senior Secondary students interested in pursuing a career in a Zoo setting are encouraged to join one of our Career Awareness Days. They will discover the many careers on offer at the Zoo and the best ways to pursue these. They will get a chance to talk to keeping and non-keeping staff and ask questions.Cost: $30 per student.  Remaining dates for 2008: 3rd September and 26th November.  These will be advertised to SA schools in week 1 of Term 3.

Teacher Inservice

One day in each school holidays we hold a Teacher Inservice day. This is a chance for teachers to find out all about our Education programs, to meet the Education Staff and to have a look in some “behind the scenes” areas of the Zoo.
Professional Development Hours: 6
Cost: $65.00 (includes morning tea and lunch)

Education Officer Assisted Lessons

Education Officers are available to take lessons at negotiated times on various conservation and environmental topics. These lessons are negotiated with teachers to best support student learning outcomes and needs. A “request for a lesson” form can be sent to you on request which will need to be filled in and returned before confirmation of a lesson.
