Conservation & Research
Conservation
Zoos SA, through its operations at Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Zoo, considers the delivery of its conservation objectives as an organisational priority. The organisation’s aim is to assist conservation of the natural diversity of life on earth. In addition to the conservation education role of the two zoos, Zoos SA contributes directly to a number of threatened species conservation programs. These range from native Australian species, some extinct in South Australia to exotic species from South America, Eurasia, Africa and South East Asia.
Zoos SA was awarded Winner of the 2008 ARAZPA In Situ Conservation Award – Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby Reintroduction Project.
Research
Research is one of the five fundamental aims of Zoos SA.
We define research broadly as the creation of new knowledge. We do fundamental and applied research on animals and their environments in captivity and in the wild, with particular emphasis on conservation.
Knowledge gained through this research is used to further the other aims of Zoos SA: education for conservation, better animal management in captivity and the wild, and recreation through appreciation of the natural environment and living things.
Zoos SA in a joint application with Alice Springs Desert Park was awarded Winner of the 2008 ARAZPA Research Award – The Red-tailed Phascogale Research Program.
